Safer Route 1 Crossing

Last weekend a man was killed trying to cross Route 1DCist has a summary of the events as well as a map showing the locations of the nearest cross walks.  Not only are there too few cross walks, but the ones that exist are not safe.  I'm not sure what the solution is, and I hope to explore this issue more in this blog.

What's in a name?

The first issue I'd like to tackle is the name.  What do we call ourselves and our Geographic area?  I tell people I live in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County, but that can be a mouthful.  Some other options:

Mount Vernon - It is our most historic landmark and home of the father of our country, but this seems to leave out the people at the North end.

Hybla Valley - It is smack in the middle and the commercial hub of the region, but I think it has negative associations with the old run down shopping center and strip malls.

SoFoNiFi - We could name it like they do in New York.  This stands for South of Four Ninety Five.  Alternatively, we could use NoFoBel, for North of Fort Belvoir.

I'm sure I will revisit this issue.  Send me your suggesstions.

The Neighborhood

This is a blog about the far Southeastern section of Fairfax County.  Roughly, it includes this area:

It includes neighborhoods such as Goveton, Hybla Valley, Gum Springs, Engleside, Fort Hunt, Mount Vernon, and so on.
This blog will explore the people, places, and events of our little corner of the world.   I will also hit on issues such as traffic, development, and the future of the region.  I may throw in a restaurant review or two.  Enjoy.
