Engleside and Out
This is a neighborhood blog dealing with my section of far-eastern Fairfax County, Virginia. The area is bounded by 495 to the north, the Potomac River to the East, Fort Belvoir to the South and Telegraph Road to the West. We discuss all things related to the area, including businesses, neighborhoods, things to do, and plans for the future.

Safer Route 1 Crossing
Last weekend a man was killed trying to cross Route 1. DCist has a summary of the events as well as a map showing the locations of the nearest cross walks. Not only are there too few cross walks, but the ones that exist are not safe. I'm not sure what the solution is, and I hope to explore this issue more in this blog.

What's in a name?
The first issue I'd like to tackle is the name. What do we call ourselves and our Geographic area? I tell people I live in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County, but that can be a mouthful. Some other options:
Mount Vernon - It is our most historic landmark and home of the father of our country, but this seems to leave out the people at the North end.
Hybla Valley - It is smack in the middle and the commercial hub of the region, but I think it has negative associations with the old run down shopping center and strip malls.
SoFoNiFi - We could name it like they do in New York. This stands for South of Four Ninety Five. Alternatively, we could use NoFoBel, for North of Fort Belvoir.
I'm sure I will revisit this issue. Send me your suggesstions.

The Neighborhood
This is a blog about the far Southeastern section of Fairfax County. Roughly, it includes this area:

It includes neighborhoods such as Goveton, Hybla Valley, Gum Springs, Engleside, Fort Hunt, Mount Vernon, and so on.
This blog will explore the people, places, and events of our little corner of the world. I will also hit on issues such as traffic, development, and the future of the region. I may throw in a restaurant review or two. Enjoy.
